Let’s not pull any punches – I’m a monumentally bad cook. There is no recipe that I can’t mess up. No appliance I can’t arc weld food to. No Kitchen is safe in my presence. I am like the Arch Poltergeist of the food world. As a result so many people have recommended getting a slow cooker, they are fool proof I am told. Well let’s see.
It was the usual school morning start. Drop a heavy dumbbell on my foot. Stand barefoot on a Lego figure. Wipe up another cat accident. Try to find the missing school PE sock. Trip over the dog and drop son’s breakfast over floor. Why has the school bag shrunk – currently as full as a parachute backpack. Try to find ingredients for Food Technology (son so helpfully informs me 2 minutes before we have to leave). All while convincing son that everything is cool and going strictly to plan.
A slow cooker is purchased, reassuringly I opted for the one which said ‘the easiest way to cook great food’. First recipe – chicken stew- it’s must be a winner. All I have to do is dump the ingredients in (which is fantastic given the morning chaos unfolding around me) and let it cook on the low setting for 6 hours. Leave it to cook while he’s at school and I am out – perfect. Even our son was unusually looking forward to some edible food for the first time in years (excluding pizza deliveries).
More of a rarity, as I pick up our son from school he talks about maybe even dipping some bread in the mouth watering stew. So we both excitedly enter the house waiting to enveloped by the intoxicating aroma of high end cuisine.
Nothing no smell. Must be the really good lid sealing in those mouth watering flavours. I wish….
“Dad it’s stone cold, you did switch it on”. Followed by “What a muppet”.
So that nights fine cuisine was tinned soup and bread. That was actually option 3. Option 2 was microwave risotto – unfortunately somebody forgot to rip a hole in the top of the packet and at 45 seconds it exploded.
So tonight’s fine cuisine will hopefully be cooked and hot sausage casserole. Yes it has been switched on.
Wow! And here I thought I was going to read about an awesome home cooked meal! I use a slow cooker all the time, but yes; it works only when turned on. ๐

Itโs another great life lesson. But currently it seems to be working and producing a lovely smell.

You know, maybe, just maybe, his slow cooker manual missed to point that out ๐ haha

Definitely instruction failure rather than operator failure.

It happens. And, makes for great stories.
Don’t knock on yourself so hard. You do have a lot on you…much to deal with. You are doing the best you can with what you have to work with.

Thank you. The force of the slow cooker is strong – itโs working today.

I love slow cooking. I have two cookers, two different sizes. The smaller one is older & takes a while to heat up (cranky). The newer one is larger and has three settings…hi, lo & warm. It has a mind of its own. No matter the three settings, IT likes hi. I have to tend it like a toddler. ๐๐คจ๐๐ฅ

I blame the recipe. Did it say โturn on the slow cookerโ? No? There. Not your fault!

Your absolutely right, faulty instructions.

Here’s a tip. Assemble ingredients in the ceramic pot the night before. Store in Fridge. Put ceramic pot into base and TURN ON in the morning before you leave. NO morning chaos that way and he can help you put the ingredients together.

Now thatโs what a I call a plan.

Ohhhh such a great tip. Don’t own a slow cooker myself, but when I do, I’ll be sure to do this!

SO much easier. I NEVER have time in the morning other than to try to tame my hair and run out the door. More leisurely pace in the evening. You can assemble the recipe while you are cooking dinner. Slow cookers are awesome. I have had numerous ones in 3 different sizes for almost 40 years. They are a time saver and meat is SO tender when you cook it in there.

Wow! Thatโs amazing! I shall put one on my Christmas list ๐ Iโve heard great things, and seen them on shows like QVC, but thatโs as far as Iโve gone. Thank you for the great tip. Thereโs nothing better than making life easier in the kitchen. ๐๐๐ฝ

The 1 quart size is perfect for leftovers. I leave the base at work and bring the insert home. Fill it with leftovers, take it to work the next day. Drop it in the base and turn it on about 10am and I have a wonderful hot meal by 11:30am for my lunch. Saves money and food.

I think the โleaving it onโ has always put a certain fear in me, like, I donโt want the thing to catch fire.
But it would such a great addition in my kitchen.

Another fault with the instructions, they fail to mention that the pot gets hot and will burn โmyโ exposed fingers.

I’ve used them for 40 years and nary a fire to be had. That is a rare occurrence. Use it on a weekend when you are home to test it.

I definitely will. I will start by already hinting it to my husband! Lol For Christmas ๐๐ฝ I donโt have too many appliances, besides my blender and toaster oven. Which I always use. So this will exciting to have.

It does make life a lot easier when you have a busy week. If you google it, there is a website that will give you recipes for 20 freezable quick meals. You put everything in a gallon zip lock. When you are ready to use, you thaw, dump into the crockpot, add a couple fresh ingredients, cover, turn on and come home 8 hours later to a wonderful aroma and a meal that is ready. Good luck! Let me know what happens!!

I rec’d my original 4qt one in 1980 as a wedding shower gift. I just replaced it with a 6qt one earlier this year. GAVE the 4qt away as it still worked just fine. Just wasn’t big enough for the recipes I like. They do not wear out too fast if you get a good’un.

Shows how little I know, thought they were a new thing. As a kid my mum would always cook with a pressure cooker. Now that used to scare the pants off me.

You made me chuckle when I read this and then in honour of you, I just tried to steam a bowl of rice in the steamer. When the buzz went off, I lifted the cover only to realise I’ve forgotten to add water into the bowl, essentially I’ve been steaming a bowl of uncooked rice. I shouldn’t have laughed at you ๐

OOOOOH MY GOSH THIS IS MY LIFE! I’ve started fires in the oven, melted food to pots so badly we had to throw them out. Crockpots are my safe place in the kitchen, though even with the crockpot I mucked up my contribution to this year’s thanksgiving dinner… ๐ฆ
