Came across a photograph taken probably 5 years ago. Oh how the world seemed so different then. Every Sunday in Switzerland we had the same ritual. We would take the first boat across Lake Thun to Interlaken. We would immediately head for this hotel and drink hot chocolate outside – regardless of the weather.
I also vividly recall sitting here when one morning my son’s different take on the world (to myself) became clear. I noticed sports cars driving past. I remember saying something like
“that’s a Ferrari and that’s a Porsche and wow that’s a Maserati.” Don’t get many of those in Yorkshire.
I remember turning to my partner who said without raising a glance “that’s nice” as she continued to scan the food menu.
Looking at our son he was excitedly flapping his hands. Not at the cars but at a bird flying above us.
“It’s a vulture.” Don’t get any of those in Yorkshire.
Now that my son has educated me. I realise which view is more stunning. Which view should be treasured. Now I would say “Wow that’s a stunning big bird, son what is it and I wish those noisy dirty cars would sod off”.
Aww my first memory from Switzerland was like a fairy tale. It was getting off the train and walking out to see a mirror perfect lake with a chalet, snow capped mountains and swans…… those memories will never leave you. ❤

It’s such a beautiful country. In fact it becomes so stunning that it almost feels like one of the Marvel or Star Wars CGI landscapes. It does stay with you.

I lived in Lausanne for 4 months back in 1985 and 86. It was so beautiful (the country) though my time there was tough.

I’m sorry your time was tough when you lived there. Only went to Lausanne once, it was stunning.

Your lovely son has such a wonderful way of grounding you and the rest of us when you share his amazing world. Thank you 🙂💕

Thank you. He’s certainly grounds me. It frustrating that because of his Aspergers he struggles to show this side with others.

The birds will always be the better view. I learned a long time ago that we should enjoy the different ways people see things. Its always enlightening to change your perspective.

Very true. Change of perspective is something frequently missing today.

I’ve never been to that country, but I love how kids see the wonder at what they’re passionate about–like with my sons, this situation would be totally reversed. I’d be the one trying to get their attention on the vulture, while Biff would be hopping up and down at the sight of all the cool cars. 🙂

As long as they can follow up interests that’s the main thing. Our son has made a wise choice with birds as where we live he can see a wide variety unfortunately sports cars might as well be extinct.

We’re not exactly on a race track, either. Tractors, though…we got plenty of those!

Tractors are great. We used to go to a petting zoo which had an old tractor parked up for kids to climb on. He would spend hours on it until another kid arrived.

That’s true. We grow up and grow old too fast. Sometimes it’s the world’s doing, sometimes it’s just us.

I think the trick is to allow ourselves a lot of silliness and monkeying around, never mind what the neighbours or others think as long as we’re not bothering them.
The Rain Footie you enjoyed with your son is surely a step in the right direction😀😀
