Our son has a bond with animals. He feels so comfortable with them. As he says “they might occasionally want to eat you but they never ever try to judge you”. Our local zoo gives you the opportunity to interact with some of the animals. As long as we go early, before the crowds arrive, then he is in raptures. The looks we get as we leave just as most families are queuing up to get in.

Dad was brave on the photo above and managed to get close enough to take a picture. On encounters with snakes, tarantulas and reptiles you normally find Dad a respectful 100 yards away – with at least two walls between me and the stuff of my nightmares. A few weeks ago he got to handle a cotton snake, a bearded Chinese dragon and two tarantulas. He was just so happy. Strangely dad was hid behind a wall.

For all his confidence with these terrifying animals he does have a couple of beast fears. Strangely those two killer beasts I am really brave with and would happily stroke them. 🐄 Cows and 🐪 camels.

  1. Funny how we all view different animals and things. Welcoming snakes and spiders but scared of cows and camels is normal. Personally, I fear roaches but have no issue with spiders. My daughters loves animals too so this was a nice read… thank you! 🙂

  4. Declan told me that some spiders are “cute” and asked if I knew tarantulas could be kept as pets? I told him no way, no how is a spider moving into this house. I’m with you – terrified of those things!

      1. Tarantulas are gentle, sweet creatures. You can accidentally (or, on purpose) kill one just by dropping it on a hard floor…might split their tummies open.

        I’m uneasy with a snake until I KNOW it isn’t poisonous. I grew up with garden snakes. Good pest control. I had more trouble over the Orb Weavers. GAH.

        You didn’t want to pet the dragon?

      2. Orb Weavers just looked them up, they can bugger off as well. My fear of snakes came from a holiday to see my sister In Africa. Went to a snake park and a zoo keeper thrust this snake he was holding close to my face, fangs open, and happily announced this was the third most dangerous snake in Africa. That zoo keeper can bugger off as well.

        My grandmother always told me not to mess with her spiders. She said they ate the flying pests. I remember crying that the spiders would get me. They were huge and you could make sweaters out of their web material. OY.

      1. Haha! I think I’d do the same. There a place here called, ‘Butterfly World.’ They have an enclosed exhibit where you can hold smaller birds, it’s enclosed so the birds don’t fly away. Haha! No, thank you!

      7. They are what I think of when I see a package of marshmallow peeps. They nest in anything. We have to make sure we close the mailbox lid on the porch. Last year, they did their level best to nest in my wreath on the door. They are the bunny-rabbits of the bird world. Heh.

  9. Sounds like a fun trip! Thanks for sharing. There’s something really elegant about birds, and I think they know it. Pretty colors on the one pictured!

    I don’t mind spiders as long as they have the decency not to crawl on any part of me. :p otherwise, I respect their role in the creepy-crawly world.
