“Dad I have come across a lot of Sherlock Holmes stuff haven’t I”

He has. Maybe he gets it from me but he has always had a fascination with Holmes.

He used pocket money to pay for the Sherlock Holmes Costume from Amazon.

He has read his Hound of the Baskerville graphic novel I can’t think how many times. Having it read for him and now on his own with his reading pen.

He has listened to many of the great Detectives novels including A Study in Scarlet, The Sign of Four, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and The Adventure of the Final Problem

He visited the staggering Reichenback Falls in Switzerland. Sherlock and arch evil villain Moriaty fell to their deaths here in ‘The Adventure of the Final Problem”

He has visited the Reichenback Falls local town – Meiringen. The town pays homage to Holmes and has a museum dedicated to the great detective. I will do a separate post about this one day.

He has seen several movies and TV shows, with so many different actors portraying Sherlock;

    Robert Downey Jr
    Benedict Cumberbatch
    Rupert Everett
    Christopher Lee
    Peter Cushing
    Jeremy Bret
    Basil Rathbone

Last night he asked to see the second Robert Downey Jr movie. Part way through our son calmly said

“I know he is a fictional character but I do think Holmes has Aspergers. Or acts like he does. It’s probably why I like him so much. Apart from the drugs I think I understand why he is like who he is”

I asked if that made me Dr Watson.

Don’t be silly Dad. With your cooking you would have to be the evil Moriaty”

      1. Thank you! I think it is supposed to be the low seventies which should be nice. I am into packing and prepping the house for when I am away now. Hope you have a good weekend with your son!

  1. 🀣 🀣 🀣 I simply adore your son’s sense of humour. And … it is a credit to your parenting that he is not in the least bit intimidated of saying that to you! Hello, Moriarity! 🀣 Give your son a ‘high five’ βœ‹ from me!

  2. Holmes + Aspergers = Elementary!
When I look back at the fictional characters I most empathise with, they all have traits that today would probably place them somewhere on the autism spectrum. Of course, I think in every case, the author would have been unaware that autism even existed, they simply modeled the character on the “quirks” of someone or some people they were familiar with.

  3. I guess that makes Captain Chaos Dr Watson then? πŸ˜‰

Your boy has a very good analytical brain, of that there is no question!

I can see how he would relate to Sherlock! πŸ™‚

Does he have a favourite actor to play him??

      1. I did enjoy the RDJ film series, but i thought he was just a tad too much ‘American’ to be my ‘best’ Sherlock. I really liked the TV series with Ben Cumberbatch, but i’m going to say Peter Cushing was my archetypal Mr Holmes. (But Jude Law makes the best Dr Watson!)

(I WAS going to point out that Moriarty was an evil genius which kinda lets you off, and suggest maybe you would be a better Mrs Hudson!… but then i remembered your cooking ‘skills’ and decided not to mention it!) πŸ˜‰

  4. Well, better Moriarty than Lestrade!!

I like the Robert movies, too, and he’s right–Holmes definitely had a unique wiring that allowed him to absorb the world in a way others didn’t. πŸ™‚

Heard from a little Blondie bird you two get to go to the zoo sometime. Hope it’s fun! Our spring holiday was spent at home because I had grading. We’re boring here. πŸ™‚

      1. Alas, no. Well maybe May–Memorial Day weekend (end of the month) is usually a good chance to go, as Bo as has an extra day off of work, so we could hopefully get up there for a couple of nights. Blondie’s hoping we can go birdwatching. πŸ™‚

      2. I really hope you do go. I think you all need a break. I having got round to writing about it yet but last week was tough. Just needed to do something so went outside with some binoculars to do a bit if birdwatching. After 5 minutes my shoulder took a glancing bird poop blow from our delightful starling who lives in our roof. Really summed up the week.

      3. Ha! Yeah, I was waiting for something to go wrong when I took the car in, or when I sold plasma, but behold!–veins and car are both still working! Now if I could just survive hosting egg hunts and lent dinners and gathering kid stuff to sell…
