When it comes to elections I let our son decide my vote. It’s not really my world anymore. It’s his generations world. He decides.

So we have Local and European elections coming up. For ages we don’t hear from the politicians then suddenly our letterbox fills with promotional leaflets. I have kept them to one side for our son to look at.

I hand him what is left of one leaflet – not much at all really. Very badly chewed. But we think it’s an independent candidate.

Clearly the dog doesn’t like that candidate. So he’s not getting our vote”

Next is an independent candidate still in one piece. I went through what he stood for.

Apart from he was born in Yorkshire that makes no sense what’s so ever. No idea what that meant so no vote here”

Next up was a very Right Wing Candidate.

He looks an awful person”

We went through his leaflet.

He is an awful person, no vote”

We’ve not had anything from the Labour Party Candidates.

Well if they can’t be bothered to tell us what they are going to do THEN we can’t be bothered to vote for them. Shame because I would like to vote for them. That teams Leader (Corbyn) sometimes says the best things but sometimes is a bit stupid”

Then we had the Liberal Democrat Candidate.

“She looks a really nice person. She’s a mum and she wants to improve the environment and help the schools. She is honest saying we need to pay more taxes to pay for it. She has one of our votes”

Then it’s the two Conservative Candidates.

These photos clearly make them look like they are going hunting for Pheasants. They keep saying that they are going to improve services and yet they say they are going to slash taxes. Do they think we are stupid. No votes”

That’s a good job because I ain’t voting for a party containing the odious May, Gove, Johnson, Hunt, Raab, Rees-Moog.….

Then we have a candidate who is just in favour of Brexit.

All she talks about is that she wants to leave Europe as soon as possible but doesn’t say anything about what happens after that. No vote”

“Are the Greens competing”

Don’t know, not seen anything from them.

Shame we can’t get Greta to be our leader”

She would certainly get my vote.

Maybe the Greens and the Reds (Labour) should merge to form the Browns. That sounds like a great party”.

So we have only one candidate selected. These elections we get more than one vote.

“Right we need to setup our own party. With a bit of touching up you can be the face of the party (said with a very big giggle)”

What shall we stand for. These days people will vote for anything silly”

How about being a single issue party. Let’s keep it really simple. Let’s pinch something from Spongebob. How about our issue being – free Krabby patties for all.

That’s a winner. When you are elected you can work with that nice Liberal candidate and you can start changing the world”

So tomorrow we start saving the planet, today I need to find a heap of makeup and start the touching up process……

  1. Maybe you should ask your dog about the chewed up leaflet. Did he find it hard to swallow or was there a hint of a pleasing flavour. If it was really great you would have been none the wiser as the whole leaflet would have come out the other end eventually.

  2. How many political parties do you have? Goodness…

Careful believing a politician that promises things (I’ve suddenly got ‘Hope & Change’ stuck in my head…). “Helping the schools” and “saving the environment” are battle cries over here. Guess what? Our charming overlords are still failing…

I don’t vote. It only encourages more nonsense & insanity.

  3. ‘Touching Up’ has a completely different connotation over here…. Just sayin’ 😉

So the Voice of the People said nearly 3 years ago that they wanted Britain out of the EU and here you are about to vote for more EU politicians?? Words fail me!

It’s unbelieveably sad that a 12 year old boy has more political understanding and better analysis than those ‘adults’ who supposedly ‘run’ the country. 😦

It maybe gives us some slight hope though, that things could start to get better in the future… if any of us are left to see it.

Technically, i think i am still a British citizen (dual nationality) so you get my vote…

    … but i won’t be touching you up! 😉

Our Elections are in 3 weeks time! 😦

  4. Did the gerbils not bother to send in a pamphlet either? LOL how do they expect to get more of the popular vote if they don’t even send out pamphlets?!

This is great – One of my degrees is in political science and I LOVE that you are doing this with your son. Politics was never discussed in my house growing up and as an adult, even with a poli sci degree, I find that I’m a little meh about Canadian politics. I’ve never been interested in it. But introducing it to children and letting them really know the value behind their vote is amazing.

  5. Assuming I get to vote in the European Parliament elections, I should ask my eldest son who he thinks I should vote for. I have a (party) preference, but it will be interesting to see to what extent he agrees.

  6. There is a lot of wisdom here – starting with the recognition that this world is no longer really ours, but belongs to the generations following us. I think it’s great that you have conversations with your son about the elections. Personally, I like the Spongebob scenario – Krabbie needs to be freed!

Thanks for this – I really enjoyed it!

  8. I love that your son is getting your vote…

And are you going to be leader of the brown party? Does that mean somewhere between Centre left and Hard Left?

By the Way, you have to introduce your son to
    thedodo.com
They have some great stuff about nature (but you need to be selective).

This is an awesome time-lapse metamorphosis of a caterpillar

All of their videos tend to have an uplifting message. I think we could all use a few of those. 😉❤️

  9. It’s so fun to read his reasoning. And I love your own party idea. You know, here for the past two major elections my husband has had a hard time selecting either candidate so he has written my name in. I think it is always funny to see my name on the list of people voted for at our local office. AND I told him to stop – one more time and I bet the FBI is going to be researching me 🙂
