It’s potatoes for tea tonight….. Something nice about eating your own vegetables. Anyone for chips or crisps or boiled potatoes.

In the end a few went into a warming vegetable stew. Didn’t predict that.

Before 2016 I (We) spent far too much time living the future. Thoughts about retirement. Marriage in the future. Visiting places like Canada and New Zealand – in the future. Planning for retirement, maybe even an early one. Dreaming of moving to Switzerland, down the line. Another child, one day…… And yes worrying about the future. Too much time thinking about what could go wrong with meetings, plans and life. Given all the time spent worrying it’s telling that the one thing that happened was never thought about.

Then the world caved in. That future had just died.

Suddenly my mind set changed. From spending too much time living in the future, I suddenly was living in the past. Reliving memories. Too many what if, why didn’t I – questions. Refusing to move from a door which had just shut permanently. So much wasted energy.

Now in 2020, hopefully the balance is now better. It’s more about living in the moment. Yesterday has gone, tomorrow does not exist yet and is so unpredictable. The only thing I can influence is the present. Just try to enjoy every single moment. It’s not easy but so worth it.

  1. Send us a few of those tatties in the post…along with the crumble we are still waiting for!
I served Jack some charlotte potatoes mixed with finely chopped spring onion and some homemade mayo and even more finely chopped radish (he said he doesn’t like radish, but he liked them in my potato salad).

    ❤ Enjoy every moment ❤

  2. Vegetables fresh from the garden are definitely the best. Wonder if you can grow potatoes in pots. Maybe next year instead of growing flowers or weeds I’ll plant potatoes. I think my neighbor wonders about me. I started watering my weeds. 😀 Keep em guessing… and keep smiling. 😀

    1. You caught me trying to fix my blog. These are grown in pots. We are on a rocky hill, so only got a few inches of soil. I watered my weeds today, it seemed a good thing to do. You must have a little Yorkshire in you. That’s probably the most horrifying thing you’ve heard today…….🙄😂

  3. Taters, precious! I’ll eat them any way, even raw! Nom nom nom!

Great wisdom, you have gained, Grasshopper! Like Yoda, I shall write. 🤣🤣 Having only this moment, it’s best to enjoy it!

The way things change around the Casa, I doubt British weather would even faze me😂😂😂💌

  4. Coming from Manitoba, the only potato worth growing is the Red Pontiac. Not the car, the potato! It is by far the tastiest potato, boiled, mashed, fried, saladed, french fried, baked, scalloped, roasted or broasted in the world. But I’m not prejudiced, am I?

      1. For me it is. Obviously I grew up on red potatoes, specifically the Red Pontiac as they were called then, and I was in my teens before I ever experienced “white” potatoes, and the difference was day and night. Reds had a consistency that let you know you were eating something real, while whites tasted like dust mixed in moist soil. Moving away from Manitoba in the 60s led to all kinds of potaoes that stopped me from eating them for awhile, no matter how they were prepared. Oh I could rant on about the horrors of the Idahoan pitato, or the Prince Edward Island potato for days… But I won’t. Though those Yukon Gold genetically-altered potatoes that are so popular now… I just realized I have no idea what kind of potatoes are grown in Ireland. The picture of the Yorkshire potatoes actually looked cute, if you polished and shellacked them.
But each to their own. We know that. I guess I really am a prairie boy at heart. I’d rather be dead than not eat Red.

      2. I hope you have good luck. There really is, or wasn’t, anything to growing them. I’ve heard some compnanies have genetically altered some to not grow from regular potato eyes. Trying to turn potatoes into capitalists. How not natural!

  5. Impressed with your homegrown potatoes lol … I have never ever grown potatoes 🥔 … that is very cool!

I like this post. It is not easy to go forward after devastating losses. I’m glad you are learning to enjoy your moments while you have them 😊

  6. It’s difficult, but let’s try to stay in present! I’ve been having the same thoughts this summer with mom’s stroke. Enjoy the potatoes, they look well! I will have to wait for sometime for mine to grow.

      1. I had a really good harvest a few years ago. Well, until I realised that every pod had a caterpillar in it.

But this year there’s been nothing.

  7. That is an interesting point of view. I never thought of looking at it that way. You are right, when we spent too much time thinking about the future and something happens that changes our future thoughts, all of a sudden our thoughts go exactly the other way. Memories, regrets, trying to pull the past back into the present, or trying to push the past out of the present (depending on the reason). And all of a sudden you are between both and realize what it means to be in the moment because it is the only time we really have. Also, the current corona situation supports that living in the now. Wow, that was insightful, Gary!

  8. Might I have mine baked, with a bit of butter, sour cream, and chopped scallions? You’ve got the right idea, my friend … take what you have, live today the best you can and deal with tomorrow when it comes.
