Another sign. Another sign that autumn is fast approaching.
Signs are always useful. Like signs from school. Signs telling us what on Earth are we supposed to be doing.
School did say that the individual subject teachers would be hopefully in touch to let Hawklad know what he is supposed to be doing while he is doing the enforced ‘school at home’ project. Teachers are really busy. We are not expecting one to one help or lots of telephone calls. But I was hoping for maybe just one email for each subject just summarising the work requirement for the lesson or the week. Maybe another email to check if he is doing ok.
So far only one teacher has emailed once setting out what is expected of Hawklad for that subject. Luckily one of the new Teaching Assistants is really trying to help as well. She is attempting to contact the teachers and remind them about Hawklad. She has sometimes obtained some more information that she has passed onto us. But she is struggling as well. Plus she has her existing class responsibilities which she can’t just drop.
So in a nutshell we are really none the wiser about what is going on in most of the classes. We don’t even know what topics are being looked at. So the school day consists maybe of one 90 minute block when Hawklad can do a reasonably full lesson. The rest of the day is filled with looking at blank screens and empty school email boxes. All we can do is wait and randomly pick some educational videos to watch. It’s all so very frustrating.
So definite signs of Autumn arriving, signs of meaningful school help would be most welcome.
Disgusting, is all I can say with the school. I could say more. But I will keep it to that.

This must be so frustrating for you. When we went to school, we had course books for each subject. If we missed a few days due to illness or vacation we could just see which chapter was being taught and catch up. Can you contact any class mates of your son to see what they are doing at school that day?

I suppose they are aware of his need for the security of structure?

I would hope so. I donโt think they quite get it though.

I’m so sad that you’re not getting the support you need, nor the opportunity to use alternate programs. We have a few “alternate education” state sanctioned homeschooling programs here. I know some are even free because they the student-related tax dollars. But I don’t think many parents know about them, even with the pandemic.

We had a few but this government has shut them down.

It’s really nice that that teachers assistant is trying to help, but I’m sorry that you’re not getting nearly enough assistance. That must be very frustrating. Just keep doing what you can and don’t forget what you said about Hawklad getting to a happier place. Stay out of the rain Superdad.

Yes Iโm not forcing things. Itโs amazing what games he can find on his school iPad. You stay out of rain as well.

Good luck with it. In my experience 10% of teachers have a price above rubies, 80% aren’t, and 10% should be removed from the profession.
In case you think I’m being unkind, you should have seen the post before Julia told me I was “being unkind” and added “and you certainly aren’t using THAT word on our computer”.
I base my findings on what I saw when teachers used to bring kids for days on the farm, and they were probably better than the true average.
Some were so stupid they didn’t bring pens and forgot their lunch – the teachers, not the kids!

Not helpful at all. I feel for you. Here in Ontario we still have online school as well as in-class, so it’s not much different for those keeping their kids home as it has been since the lock-down. I pray that things will improve for you and your son.

The online systems will only be switched on when a school goes into official lockdown. Many schools had planned to do 50% online teaching to reduce the numbers in classes to less than 15. Unfortunately the government stopped that.

That is a real shame. I’m not sure what the rest of Canada is doing about this, but I’m glad for the sake of parents keeping their kids at home that we do have this option here.

Thatโs what it should be about. Providing options to parents.

I still think you guys should just test him out if school completely. There are sample tests avail on line, arent there?
Find out what he’ll be tested on and study that. His school had never been helpful and honestly… he’s NOT going back in October. It’s a nice idea, but purely fantasy. Even if he could somehow, magically get over his germ phobia, there’s still the social anxiety and all things autism.
๐ค๐ค๐ค๐ค gonna stop now. I’m SO angry at his school and the idjits in your government and๐ค๐ค
Sending HUGS!!๐๐๐๐๐๐

Your so right. He ainโt going back in October unless we get one if those Dr Strange 1 in a million possibilities. Have to say the longer heโs out the less likely is that he would go back, even if the pesky virus did disappear. Trying to get my head round plan b. To be fair to school, they did want to put all kids on 50% homeschooling to create more space in school. The Government told them they couldnโt. Madness. xxxxxx

Here we have a website with the full school curriculum requirements online. Not a covid thing, was made a few years ago. So what I did when we started out was have a read of what was expected for my kids yeargroups and used it as a checklist. Itโs not very detailed but more like general guidelines for teachers.

Iโm hovering the school till October then if no better looking to do something similar.

Usually I cringe with fall, because I know winter is coming ๐๐๐ ugh here we go lol (but again, a spoiled person living in California lol)
But this year Iโm kinda ok with it – cause you know โfireโ lol … fine bring on the floods and cold ๐คจ๐โ๏ธ
My cringe is not as bad this year lol โ๏ธ
It sounds to me like they just punishing the kids who wonโt come back? Make it harder so you forced ๐คจ
Thatโs not right… they had all summer to get situated – I really donโt like them.
At least you have a few who care and are trying to get you the information you need to kick it off. Hopefully more of that comes and is just first day crappy stuff – maybe get better ๐

What are your winters like?

This is for my area… Sacramento and foothills, but California has many different types of areas – they different, depending where in state you are – California is HUGE!!
Winters are short, wet – as long as isnโt a drought, it rains ALOT, cloudy/overcast/dreary, rarely drops below 31 degrees (-0.55 Celsius – did I do that right?? That sounds weird)
December and January is our winters … fall is October November – it is โbriskโ… maybe 60โs/70โs (15/21c)
Spring will start usually around March (sometimes before, sometimes after) and then it starts warming up, still have some rain from time to time… and then summer HOT ๐ฅต lol… no rain at ALL and very very dry!! Like desert ๐ต
Yours must be REALLY cold!! ๐ฎ what are yours like? Dare I ask lol

No that makes sense. So basically the same here apart from the temperature, the floods, and wind then. ๐

๐๐๐ well I didnโt mention those… we do have severe fall winds…
One time it was perfect kite ๐ช weather and we went to buy a kite – but I live in California ๐คจ and was told โoh sorry that is a seasonal itemโ ok well itโs windy when is the season??? Lol
I found a store that sold ALL kites – amazing store – any kind of kite you want… so we got 2 and flew kites that day… during actual kite season – there is no wind ๐คจ๐๐ fricken California
Floods come in winter ONLY if we get tons and tons of rain – so who knows what kind of year that will be??
You temperature is colder than mine? Do you get snow?

Thatโs funny. We bought a kite and it snapped in the wind within seconds. Clearly not tested in Yorkshire

Hahaha… in fall we get some really good wind sometime – but when we are supposed to have kite weather (in March) itโs crappy – and we end up running all over the plain – catching a wind and running to keep it up omg … it never stays up!!!! So fall is much better – although no winds currently – last weekend of summer I believe ?? The fall equinox is September 22nd
But the winds can wait until we have rain!!! I like having power and would not appreciate any more fires – Iโm totally burnt out!! Lol ๐๐ I can use that saying literally!! Lol ๐คจ๐๐

Ours tends to be, once the kite is up its desperately trying to keep hold of the string while staying grounded.
