Meet one of the worlds great predators. I guess these are our equivalent of the shark. The Yorkshire Spikey Shark. Hanging from the tree or hiding in the undergrowth, waiting to pounce. Pain beyond pain.

I fell off a garden ladder again yesterday. Cut my thigh, back and bit of under skin bleeding in the knee. But my forearm – oh wow the pain – landing on one of these spikey chaps was the worst part. Still hurts today. Could have been much worse. My large backside wasn’t that far away from landing with much force onto Mr Spikey.

It was just one of those accidents. Was trying to be careful but the ground just gave way. Probably thanks to Mr Mole and his tunnels. The bit I struggle with is that I’m doing these things on my own. Hawklad’s fears mean that I can’t expect him to help out. So no one to point out the risks I’ve missed. The better ways of doing things. And no one to hold the steps as I go up. Actually no one to send up the ladder rather than me !!!!! I guess it means that my life is about trying to turn two person jobs into single person projects. Not ideal but needs must. Often having to do tasks that are way beyond my skill mix. Things I shouldn’t be really trusted with.

So as I stood in the house trying to apply antiseptic to my cuts, while trying to figure out how to get a plaster on my back cut….. Hawklad appeared and gave me one of those looks…..

Dad I take it you have been gardening again. You know it’s bad for you.”

Why don’t you just pay for a professional to do it properly and safely.”

But there’s the other side of being single. Time spent with Hawklad is time I can’t work. So choices have to be made. Paying for gardening comes way down the list of priorities. So this won’t be my last garden accident. But that’s life.

  1. Thank you for reminding me why I still have not replaced the screen on my bedroom window… unstable ground and too much risk of falling off the ladder!! I can live with a closed window far more easily than broken limbs!!

    I hope you heal quickly!

  2. The Yorkshire Spikey Shark, huh? That made me laugh. The accident part doesn’t make me so happy. So sorry about that part. Keep hanging in there and I’ll keep praying. Stay out of the rain Superdad.

  3. I am so sorry you fell. Yikes! I have been there with the home improvements. In our house, all of the handy work falls to me. But when it comes to the ladder – in full tilt – even my knees are seen shaking. It really is so hard to handle alone. I am glad you are okay!

  4. I’m so mindful on ladders living alone.. so sorry you took a tumble and especially on to the predator Ouch and double Ouch!!! We have to struggle on alone sometimes, its just the way of things. I fell forward the other day when a garden container broke while I tried to move it while full of water, Jasper watched on…. luckily this time I didnt do a big injury..oh the perils of solitary living (sigh!!)

  5. I never did like being on a ladder even on solid ground. But if I don’t soon get mine out and change the bulbs in my ceiling light fixture I’m going to have an accident when I run in here for the phone and forget there is no light. The bedside lamp is in the far corner from the door, so trying to find the phone in the dark is dangerous in a room full of things and furniture.

  6. So, I am not overly convinced you would heed someone else’s advice when assessing the ‘risk’. I have a sneaking suspicion you’d be up that ladder anyway! But I get your meaning. It’s a lot to manage alone. You do a fantastic job x

  7. Thank goodness you weren’t holding a chainsaw this time! I’d tell you to stay off the the ladder but I know you’d listen about like I would.🙄🤦🏼‍♀️😂
Will there ever come a day when we’re both injury free and well rested? 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’m glad we don’t have those here. I have enough problems with the goat head thorns.

    Hope it feels better soon!💌💌💌💌

  8. Off topic: I hope you’re online right now (2:50am Pacific)… QVC is featuring Temptations stove top teapots (we don’t really have electric kettles here) and oven mitts. I know how much you want your Temptations collection to be complete!!

      1. Ohhh… now it’s microwaveable shrimp dinners. WHYYY? I don’t eat shrimp but instinct (and the images on my tv) tells me microwaved frozen shrimp is not ideal.
Guess I’m wrong… they just sold out!

  9. I hope you mend quickly, but cannot help thinking that you could perhaps use the inflatable rubber trouser inserts invented by Gumbril Junior in Huxley’s “Antic Hay” I have only just started the book so he hasn’t marketed them yet.

  10. Ooh, ouch! So sorry this happened to you! I sympathize, having my share of falls, though, with my balance as it is, I don’t have to be on ladder to fall flat on my rear. 😏 In fact, I am pretty much banned from nearly all climbing in my house anymore. Blessedly, I have a professional handyman for a husband that takes on that stuff at this point, (when he has time for our house versus a customer’s, that is. 🙄). And, honestly, his body is really starting to protest as well. He is better at being proactive than I, however. He suits up practically like Iron Man for work-knee braces, shoulder braces, sometimes a back brace. Helmets only come in as necessary. 😁 Here’s hoping for a quick recovery for you!

  11. You’re welcome! Yes, he is handy indeed. And it does seem like the Iron Man thing is helping him. I have yet to surrender to the idea, either, but getting closer to it. 🙂

  12. You make me so very glad we don’t have “spiky sharks” here. At least, I don’t think we do. It sounds very painful. Poor you! Our son doesn’t like to come over he’s afraid of bringing covid into our home. I understand that. I really do. But it has led me to doing things I would usually ask him to do for me. Right now I am eyeing the air conditioner and wondering if I can deal with it. You’ve made me rethink the wisdom of that! Be careful, Gary, Hawklad needs you so don’t take unnecessary risks. Please don’t.

  13. Those do look like the particularly lethal variety. Stay safe my friend…that includes not climbing ladders, or anything else that involves a spotter. 😉
