Don’t panic this is not the weather today….
Time creeps up on you…….
I’ve never been one who worried too much about ageing. It is what it is. I was also someone who never really lost too much sleep on the ever growing bucket list. Plenty of time to catch up and tick those all important activities off the list.
Then life happened. Too many trips to funerals. Suddenly I was aware of that ever clicking life clock.
Last night I was watching a movie based on a family skiing holiday. A holiday that went badly wrong. The Will Ferrell ‘Downhill’ Movie. The most un ‘Will Ferrell’ movie ever. It was really good and rather unsettling, especially as the main character was probably about my age. As the movie went on I could hear that clock ticking just that little bit louder.
I’ve always wanted to ski. It’s right up on my bucket list. Near the top. I’ve just never got round to doing it. A couple of trips to a really rubbish rock hard carpet slope. That’s all I’ve managed. We had plans to go to Switzerland as a family during the winter. I could see a route to finally being a proper skier. Then life happened. Those plans evaporated. So last night I was watching that family ski in the movie and that ticking clock was deafening. Will I ever ski…..
It sounds silly but that thought really depressed me. I feel further away than ever from those alpine slopes. Time and my body is not on my side. Too many years of contact sport has left me with a ‘ previously enjoyed’ body frame. A couple of things need patching up. If I get them patched up then skiing might be out of the question. That ticking clock is annoyingly deafening.
Yet I still so want to SKI.
I guess all I can do is keep that dream alive for a while longer. Put off any patching work on the body and accept a few aches. Drop as much weight as I can and stay as fit as I can for as long as I can. Buy as much time as I can for that dream to come true AND JUST HOPE.
Holding onto hope, is important.

Skiing is so fun! Picture this: I twisted my knee skiing in February, now I’m off work awaiting surgery for a torn ACL and both menisci. My knee will never be the same again. BUT I can’t wait to go skiing again π

I can so understand that. Iβm sorry about the knee, must be so painful. β€οΈ

You might have to adjust your vision of yourself from “Olympic jumper” to “bunny slope novice” but I bet you’ll be skiing! And falling down π€¦πΌββοΈ and laughing about it!ππππ

Oh the falling down thing and laughing about it (because of an old motorbike accident). For maybe those days will return to me, but for now (touch wood) I’ve not fell down for a while. [Posh voice] “Gosh, one hasn’t had the thrilling pleasure of staring at those classy dried up chewing gums π½ and beastly cigarette ends for yonks now!”

Itβs not the falling down that hurts itβs the suddenly stopping that smarts a bit.

I didn’t learn to ski until I was 40 and I absolutely love it. It was hard (much harder than I expected given how quickly my kids picked it up) but definitely worth a try π

I do have to stop speed reading first thing in the morning, for it looked to me like you were talking of bacon burning and I was all like “What now?” Oh as for bacon, I’m a carrot bacon maker and eater. I prefer pigs to be loved for the intelligent animals they are. π· Like Esther:

How t’Internet takes us all on a journey, for then I was all “I wonder how Esther is doing” then I was all “I wonder how much an Esther T-shirt is and the import charges to get one to the UK”… Of course, I agree with your original comment “Keep the BEACON of hope burning.” π₯ Oh, but you wanna know how random t’Internet has me now (before I start my day) I’ve just found the National Geographic kids games:

I understand where you come from. It feels like you missed a chance forever. But you can still do it. There are much older people skiing than you, Gary.

Uhm… no π Not at all. The last time I was skiing was with school when I had to… lol! But I used to do cross-country skiing. However, I have not done that in about 20 years either but would like to start again.

It is cool because it is a workout for the whole body. Also, it is cheaper because you don’t need any ski lift.

Go ski. Even if it’s the bunny hill. You might meet a funny bunny….

I hope you get there. Itβs difficult sometimes to imagine achieving those dreams when life deals us cards that take away part of that dream. All I would say is that if we waited until we manage x, y or a we may never get the opportunity chase a dream. Life has taught me to seize opportunities and if it was meant for me it wonβt pass me by, it just may not be at the time I expect it. I do hope youβre feeling better.

I’ve never been proper skiing either. I went cross-country skiing on a class trip once. The closest I came to down hill skiing was a bunny hill. π That’s some fine skiing. The wind was whipping in my hair that day. π

If it’s your dream to ski then you will. Some very old people have done the most amazing things and you still have plenty of mileage. Go for it!

Do not ever give up on your dreams. As hard as life may seem in this present moment life has a way of flipping the script when one least expects it. I do believe in the power of positive thinking. I really do. So please keep on dreaming and never let your hopes die. Miracles can and do happen. I’ve experienced several in my lifetime. π
