The mobile phone is leading a charmed life. Yesterday it found its way into the garden refuse bin. Today as I weeded suddenly the little bucket next to me I was filling with weeds started playing music. Never been so thankful for one of those nuisance marketing call.
With the mobile safely back in my pocket. I got back on with the job of weeding.
Then another call. A work call. 60 minutes worth of …… what’s the word I’m looking for. I can think of a few, some I can even safely write down…
Boring
Dragging
Tiring
Fruitless
Frustrating
Dull
Monotonous
Wearisome
Mind-numbing
Soul-destroying
Insipid
Stupefying
After 60 minutes I was so tempted to switch the mobile off and voluntarily drop it back in the garden waste bin. I’m old enough to remember a time before mobile technology AND today I vote for going back to then….
Yes, those were the days of freedom. You could get away from people and calls

True. Before we voluntarily chained ourselves to availability with the wireless phone, we could roam about without bother.

I don’t carry my cellphone everywhere I go. But I do when I am travelling between cities or towns, say a minimum 400 km round trip. I do that because if the car breaks down or if there is an accident (this has happened twice in the past 10 years) I can call emergency response teams. (Actually three times, I once spotted smoke in a place there should have been no smoke, and reported it. A possibly huge wildfire was prevented because I made that call. They caught it while it was just tiny.) Otherwise, watching people with their phones clamped to their ears, I wonder what is so important it cannot wait till one gets home.
And I fear the bees are being adversely affected by all the extra soundwaves in the air. Since cellphones have become popular there are less and less bees around to pollinate the flowers of the food-producing plants. I do not know this is true, but the coincidence factor is high.
Back to a time before cellphones? Except for times of emergency, I’m all for it. But one person’s emergency is another person’s idea of routine. Who am I to say what others find important in their lives?

I remember speaking to a mountain rescue team member. He was moaning as one day they got called out to an emergency which turned out to be a Walker had lost his Walkman…..

For that he should have been fined, even if it wasn’t found!

Amen! I have seen what a binding thing it becomes, especially with running our own business as well as having a very chatty husband. There are very few boundaries anymore. I can’t tell you how many times we have been out trying to have family time or time as a couple when there goes the phone. I am more firm in not answering mine, especially when I don’t recognize the number. I figure if it’s vital, there’ll be a voicemail. My husband, however, invariably picks up. I get it. Sometimes, this is about livelihood. But, when it’s a friend who knew we were trying to get away and he has an issue that could wait, it’s realllly irksome. Hmmm…no, I am not bitter or anything. 😏 At any rate, I can relate to you.

That is so soul destroying when those moments get consumed by those calls. 😊

I worked in the phone industry when cell phones were still in concept. One of the hypes was “you could be skiing in the alps and your call will find you!” I was the sole person who asked, “why on earth would you want that??”
I guess I’m lucky that my work doesn’t require a phone. They can reach me by pc or not at all… and I turn it off when I’m done working.

I got a call once when I was on holiday in Switzerland. That colleague never did that again.

In matters relating to my work, I prefer to maintain contact through email. This is not always possible for some types of work, as may be your case.

Yes sometimes we even have to pick up the phone and talk.

I agree – I could easily lose my phone, or forget my phone, and not be bothered. Too much technology at our fingertips anymore.

I always have my phone with me, but I only answer calls from daughters, or doctors, or Ben’s school. Since I rarely get any of those calls, it’s not a problem for me.
I remember the old phones and the curled cord that was 20 feet long so it could stretch all over the house. Hours spent trying to untangle the cord that had become a curled, knotted, clump.🤣🤣🤣

I think it’s safe to write this here….my boss wanted me to add apps such as TEAM to my phone. I wouldn’t, not to be difficult but it is in fact my phone, I pay the bill, not my boss. I dislike apps. I don’t trust them and so it’s something I just won’t do. (Yeah, call me old and cranky LOL).

I remember being on vacation and needing to call into a conference call. I thought it was a huge imposition. Little did I realize 24/7 availability was around the corner.
