A return to school for Hawklad in September will have to be so carefully managed. To be fair to school they are happy to do what they can. Phased start. Days to suit Hawklad. Prepared to make adjustments where they can.

But here’s the problem.

The set teaching material.

Some topics will open old wounds, reignite anxieties. This could derail everything

Let’s take this weeks lessons.

Science exam questions on Cancer,

Science lessons on diseases,

History lesson researching the murders and causes of death of the victims of Jack the Ripper. The details are graphic,

A lesson on food poisoning,

A lesson on mental health and suicide.

That’s one week. I can manage this at home but how do you address this at school. I’m not sure at all.

  2. That’s really unhelpful. My daughter suffers periods of intense anxiety about her health. One time this focussed of obsession with radiation poisoning. Unfortunately, while she was already anxious, Japan’s earthquake happened, and her class covered it in school. She stopped eating. Couldn’t swallow. It was awful.
    He will get through it but it’s a long, tough struggle. For both of you. Stay strong.

  3. Eek that is particularly grim. History seems to always focus on the gory, from what my daughter tells me. I’m sure I didn’t study diseases in science at school. I know it’s important that we train people to cure diseases but surely they can specialise in that at university? Even her English lessons are some sort of morbid poetry. It’s a minefield

  4. I can lift you all in prayers my friend. There were very heavy topics covered when my boys were young~topics that brought reality even more to the surface of their young minds. I can’t say this is true for all kids, but I feel some of their healing and understanding was better processed from others versus me. My prayer is that when it’s addressed that it’s done so gracefully, with awareness of everyone’s reactions, and with wisdom and maturity. Those who have never been through trauma will not view it as those who have. May a delicate delivery open more paths to understanding and comfort. 🙏🏻❤️

  9. Again, how insensitive these topics are chosen. So many children are or were confronted with serious diseases already. I don’t think this is a topic for such young children to deal with.

      1. I am so sorry for that. Perhaps when the next election is over things may improve. Although it will undoubtedly take a long time to repair all the damages.

      1. p.p.s. Of course if they wanted to reduce the numbers of parents willing to send their kids back, these might be the subjects chosen and therefore “Sneaky little hobbits is!”

  14. Unfortunately life is going to be full of reminders and “landmines”. They really ought to have mental health professionals to help the kids deal with issues that trigger them. It would be more helpful in the long run, I think.

    They really ARE trying to recreate Victorian Times, with all the dirt, and disease too🙄🤦🏼‍♀️ OY!
