The kinda weather not for hanging off the side of a fast moving train….

We ventured off to the cinema to watch the latest Mission Impossible instalment. Here if you go to one of the early afternoon screenings it’s usually pretty quiet but by the end of the movie, the cinema is mobbed. It was this way today, when we arrived we had the food and drink counter to ourselves.

What could possibly go wrong….

“Can we have a medium sized sweet popcorn bucket….”

The chap on the till helpfully pointed out that for just extra 50p more we could get a LARGE tub.

‘No thanks, medium is good”

The chap looked puzzled, ‘but you can get twice as much for just 50p more’

‘No it’s ok, we won’t even finish the medium’

The chap was unrelenting, ‘but it’s better value for just 50p more’

‘We never finish the medium, it would just mean more food wasted’

The chap wasn’t letting go, definitely trying to be INEVITABLE. ‘Well if I was you I would get the larger one, makes sense, as it’s much better value’

‘No, it would be a waste’

But much better value…’

‘Well only if we eat it all’

After what seemed like an age the MEDIUM bucket arrived. Guess what. Asking for a medium Dr Pepper, then a medium Coffee brought about the same philosophical debate. I was exhausted before the movie. Well at least this made us miss the annoying pre movie adverts.

Medium sized snacks in hand we enjoyed the frantic Tom Cruise ‘Save the World’ madness. Enjoyed with the added spice of picking out the parts of the movie filmed just a few miles from our house. The Alps Train segment was partly filmed on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. I hope when Tom was hanging off the top of the train that he had his thermals on…

It’s getting a bit of a common theme as the latest Indiana Jones movie had Harrison Ford visiting our local train line.

Back nearly six decades and Hawklad’s Grandad helped reopen the Steam Railway after it had been closed by the Government. After the movie we mused over what he would have made of all this. Movie stars hanging from the side of his beloved Steam Trains, with explosions, gunfire and much carnage.

We agreed, his Grandad would probably have ‘tutted’, ‘sighed’ then made sure that Tom and Harrison had bought a ticket for the journey.

  1. That is so cool the historical connection to the filming locations. Sounds like you live in a community with such great character.

I can’t wait to watch Mission Impossible. It looks amazing. Always a fun time watching Tom run around.

And yes, those upselling in the cinema drives me bonkers too. I almost need a large drink just to calm down. Wait a sec…

  2. Oh gosh! Some people just don’t give up, do they! Glad you were at least able to enjoy the movie!! I probably would have said actually just give me 2 small 🍿 popcorns, just to drive them crazy! LOL!

  3. What a great post. I’ve been on the railway years ago. It was great. And I behaved. I dunno if I would he re that popcorn bucket. I’d have probably told the guy to stuff it.

    1. I also find similar issues in Poundland where I go to the counter with my purchase and they literally reel off about 5 items I might want to buy that day for a £1. I try to tell them each time that as it’s ‘PoundLand’ , I would have picked up those items before I reached the counter if I had needed them!! So no thanks, I don’t need a car air freshener, or Tunnocks Teacakes 😁

  4. I was visiting my mother when Jim had a seizure and I needed a flight home immediately. My mother did not have wi-fi so I called the airline and got an agent who insisted I find wi-fi to safe $50, even though I kept saying it was an emergency and I needed to get home. After several frustrating attempts, I hung up and called another airline, which was happy to help. Saving money isn’t always the most important thing–in super-sizing or other life events.

  5. Perhaps they have a points system that affords them extra credit for selling “large”? You seem to be getting the weather we threw away recently! Maybe you will get the long dry patch we are promised after today.

  6. I love this post, Gary! Like you, I’ll never understand why they push VALUE over waste! Arrggghh…..more, more, more…it’s never enough! I liken it to going to the store and being asked, “Would you like to open a credit card and save 20% today?”…uh…no. They look at me, puzzled. I’ll spend the 20% if I had the card. I don’t wish to owe anybody else. Do you have time to hear my speech? To the cool stuff—the train, Hawklad’s grandpa,…Harrison and Tom-get your ticket! How fun for you two. Guess what, my friend? My white cell counts were high enough yesterday I might even go to the movies! Sending big group hugs from the Finster and me to you both! 💛🙏

  7. That is so annoying when they try to sell you more of something than you want or can use … it puts more money into the pockets of the greedy capitalists and more waste into the landfills! I’m so glad you and Hawklad enjoyed the movie, though! I haven’t seen the first “Mission Impossible” movie, so I doubt I’ll see this one, either, but I’ll take your word for it! 😉
