Living in the UK has many negatives, things like the weather, road potholes, useless Water Companies, Nigel Farage, Fuel Prices, Morris Dancing, late running trains, Brexit, did I mention the WEATHER. But then again we have some beautiful landscapes and CASTLES. Lots of Castles.
So when the clouds parted we headed off to one such castle. Helmsley Castle, over 900 years of history. It’s a wonderful adventure.

Breathtaking… I like ruins, imagining how it is meant to look like..

A bit like me then: One windswept breathtaking ruin, you just have to imagine how I’m meant to look like. LOL

Lovely photos. I feel I was there looking around myself with the different angles you taken of the castle.
I especially liked the view from inside. If those walls could speak.

So, you want to know what you might hear if those walls spoke:
“Put wood in ole!”
“Were tha born in a barn?”
“Flippin eck ow much?!”
“Tha makes a better door than a window!”
“Yer reyt daft as a brush!”
“Fancy a brew?”
“Ta luv”

Fabulous. Dorset has Corfe Castle but you can only walk round the perimeter now. Even the sheep are banned from inside the fence!

we have a castle nearest us like that, it’s private and you are kept out even though it’s just ruins

Thank you for these great photos. I so miss being able to view ancient sights. I was not a fan of English weather either but left before most of those other undesirables were an annoyance. Do all of them equal…HIM?

I love castles, probably because I live in the U.S. and nothing here is over 200-250 years old! And yes we have bad weather as well! Hurricanes have done a lot of damage to the east coast! Thanks for sharing!

And stuff of nightmares.
They were places of power and greed by the few that owned them and I always think of the majority of inhabitants, who I imagine were not often happy and overworked. Hence I see castles as sad, spooky, windy, cold and damp places.
For a storyline with castles, try the 10th Kingdom series.

I know I had a British cousin who lived in a castle, but I never learned his name or location.

I recall how her Dad would “walk” their dogs. All in the car, drive away from the big house, open the door to let the dogs out, then drive off calling them from the window. LOL

Such incredible history! I don’t know if you’ve been to Workington, but apparently, my family once owned Workington Hall (several generations ago). It’s not a castle, but those old buildings were quite impressive. The only castle I’ve visited was Stirling Castle, years ago.

Stunning pictures! Re Farage … he seems to be one of the few, whilst not a born again believer, standing up for Christianity in this land.

There are worse places to live, with worse roads and worse politicians. There are even places with worse weather. However, they lack castles and not all of them have that cheery glass half full attitude that distinguishes you Yorkshire folk. 🙂

All of them cheery? LOL

Depends who you compare them to, I suppose. I have Scots in the family.

Scots is good, Scotch in moderation too I guess.

Yes, everything is good in moderation. Apart from bungee jumping and skydiving. Even moderate amounts of them feel like they would be too much.

What a gorgeous adventure! Yes, one must take these adventures when one can, especially when the weather allows it. The Midwest is transitioning now, so we’ll have summer weather one day and winter the next aaaaaaaand that’s Wisconsin for you. Thunderstorm? ThunderSNOW? It’s all happenin’ here, lol.
So embrace those adventures into the past when you can, my friend. I hope Hawklad enjoyed the trip, too! xxxxxxx

The fact that you have castles — real CASTLES — just around you never fails to awe me. In America castles are a very storybook thing. It’s hard to remember that people actually see them in their everyday lives. 🙂
