Kinda sums up the Yorkshire weather this week…

Foolishly I listened into a radio phone in as I drove towards home. I think the show was supposed to be a discussion about the proposed disability benefit cuts but had rapidly become a ‘this is how you parent’ rant. Caller after caller jumped on a populist bandwagon. Far too many young people are receiving benefit payments rather than being FORCED to work. Mental Health issues, autism, adhd, you name it were modern day fairy tales allowing the youth of today to stay in bed, play games and be PAMPERED….. ‘In my day’ the rants continued, National Service and a good clip round the ear was the answer.
Not one young voice was aired.
Not one Health Professional voice was aired.
Not one parent voice was aired who had any experience in supporting a your person with daily, life affecting real needs.
I would have called in but strangely the show never gave out a number as the switchboard was jammed, I suspect with even more ‘in my day’ tirades….
After thirty minutes of this madness I switched off and drove the last few miles in stony silence.
This is supposed to be 2025 and it might well just have been Victorian times.
Unless they offer varying viewpoints, such talk shows are valueless. They should be exposed as such. Shame on them for not offering their call-in number.

I remember a radio person telling me that they have ‘favourite’ listeners who either fit the profile or are good for radio, that they contact to take part in call ins. Maybe the don’t need random listeners now.

It seems the collective mind is closing off empathy these days. I’m sorry you had to hear that

it really does, it’s like there is one narrative now and everyone has to get on board or become a problem

Choosing not to is even more so.

I think we might be a tad overrated.

So many people do so love to have an opinion on things they don’t understand. They are judgemental and self-righteous and completely lacking in empathy. Horrid.

I have a lot of time for those who yes might have a completely different view to me, but they take the time to listen and not just try to drown the over view out.

We also have a number of ‘shock docs’ on our radio stations! They attract those who want to be heard regardless of their knowledge and/or wisdom!
Just after ratings…

the fact they get so many listeners is really worrying.

It would just be wonderful if they allowed some with lived experience on those shows. It would open eyes, create empathy and hopefully wake more people up to the reality of how hard this caregiving life can be… and even more so for the kids!

They was a time when experience and experts were valued, now they seem to be labelled as part of the problem. Deep sigh.

Sheesh! Even if “the youth” are freeloading (which I’m sure 95% are not)… SO WHAT?!? Back in my day, I would have loved finding a way to be happy, instead of being underpaid labor!
AI is expected to take over nearly all entry level whit collar jobs soon, and the younger gen is trying to figure out how to survive in a future that seems bleak. Power to ’em!!
Punishing everyone, over the actions of a few, is sooo wrong.

I was reading an article today that wanted to go back to Victorian values to the youth would have a better attitude. It’s utter madness. Young people are being seen as a commodity again.

Over here, some state has proposed changing labor laws to allow kids to work overnight and do dangerous jobs, in order to make up for the loss of immigrant labor due to El Cheato’s deportation insanity. Well, that’s the excuse – it’s clear that they just wanted to exploit child labor and found a “justification”.

I voted for this Government, don’t get me wrong it’s better than the last one but I won’t be voting for them this time. Too much like Reform Lite now.

It is a disgrace! These people who are phoning in haven’t a clue! They’ve never had to experience being a sufferer of these disorders, or parenting a child who is. I would not listen to such rubbish xoxo

the worry is if most of the politicians phoned in they would be saying the same things.

I avoid the talk shoes, too. No matter which “party” the show leans toward, they just end up being echo chambers ramping up ideas that have little truth. Every system is exploited, sure. But no one should ever make sweeping statements about an entire generation based on the actions of a few. That’s how you drive away those you COULD connect with, could work with, could support. So flippin’ frustrating.
