Summer Mist is usually a bit of a rarity here.

Sat in the waiting room at the local Vets, waiting for the Nurse to do her stuff. Sometimes a Dog’s Life doesn’t sound too appealing. Nor does the Veterinary Nurse’s Life…. The Nurse was going to really earn her money by emptying the MadDog’s Anal Glands.

The Pet Owner can do this at home… I think NOT….

As I arrived I was handed a number of information leaflets to take home with me. Covering things like Tick Prevention, Pet Insurance and Dog Walking Services. About nine years ago I was also getting handed leaflets. Everywhere I went, everything I did, I seemed to come away with even more leaflets. Banks were the worst for this. How to deal with Grief, the help available to the Bereaved and lists of what to do next. My pockets were stuffed with them. For me, it was just too much. Overload. I couldn’t focus on anything, reading words would have just gone over my head. I can’t remember what I did with all those leaflets, hardly any got looked at in the end. All I wanted was for someone to quietly and quickly just do what was needed to be done, so I could get out of wherever I was, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Just like what the Mad Dog must have been thinking when he was with the Nurse.

After the ordeal, the Nurse offered the Mad One a small Dog Treat. Sorry if that was me, I would want so much more after that torture. At the very least, a free call to my Lawyer.

  1. When I used to own dogs, one of them needed his anal glands done once or twice. There was no way I was going to attempt doing it on him the second time when I knew how to do it at that point. But I felt for him when it had to be done at the vets.

The last time anal glands came into the equation was my last cat. Bless her. It got to the point with issues she was having with them and nothing working that she was best to have them out.
I really felt for her. But I think she handled herself better than I did.

      1. Yes. When I had work experience with a dog groomer there be some dogs that would get their anal glands done their too. That was when through her guidance I drained anal glands on her dog. But I was aware of anal glands being done on dogs before then, so no shock to me. And hence my empathy when my cat Miley had to go through it a few times until she had them removed with infection she had in them not clearing up by other ways.

  2. What a great post; made me laugh out loud, stopped me in my tracks and made me really think … all in a few brilliant paragraphs. (Oh and my sympathies lie with the dental nurse!)

  3. You so often seem to have the same weather as us. Your photo is much like the scene out of my window this morning. Poignant memories of an awful time. All those brochures are meant to offer help yet I can understand being overwhelmed by it all. If you are lucky, you have someone you can trust who will take all the necessary steps for you but far too many have to navigate on their own. I’m so sorry you had to go through such a dreadful time. And very sorry for your poor dog!

  4. Oh my, Mad Dog earned all the treats. Every time a vet/groomer says “this can be done at home” I just stare blankly at them. Talk about a terrible idea.
