A rare UK sunny day, so off we ventured to the Peak District. For a walk around the Ladybower Reservoir. It’s a big old piece of water, takes hours to walk around it.
It took 8 years to construct it and then 2 years to fill it to a depth of just over 40 metres. When it was filled, two beautiful villages were sadly, no more.
During WWII, RAF bombers practiced here with bouncing bombs for future raids on German Dams, as seen in the old Dambusters Movie.
The Reservoir also features two massive plug holes, that control the level of water and power huge hydroelectric generators.
If you ever get the chance, it’s a great place to visit and walk. But sadly NO Swimming allowed.

What a beautiful place (and fascinating history!), dear friend. I love how the sunlight is creating sparkling water. There’s a dam south of me where I used to live that I miss walking around. There IS swimming at that one in special areas only. I’d love to visit your homeland! I’ve missed being here and I’m happy that I was able to stop in and see this amazing walk–thank you for taking us along! Sending love and prayers always to you two! ❣️🙏🏻☺️

A truly beautiful place – but what a pity that it came to be at a cost of two old villages. Places of homes and people’s lives given up for a seemingly greater good.

I was walking in the Lake District during a drought and an old sunk village started to appear from a reservoir. Really haunting.

it’s huge when you stand next to it, what’s nice is there are parts that look natural.

I always meant to walk round Ladybower, but always seemed to end up at Carsington. I’m the sort of shallow man who values tourist tat and chips above beauty.
