Apparently we are enjoying the last few days of summer weather. It’s kinda sunny and kinda warm – if you ignore the cold wind. The forecasters are warning that soon the weather will be most definitely very different. Very cold, wet, grim and grey. As a result the farmers around here are desperately trying to get on with stuff. Even working when it’s dark.
It’s also time to start harvesting our own little garden crop. Today it’s a few apples, onions, carrots, tomatoes and potatoes. Some have done better than others……
Can anyone speak carrot. What’s the carrot for ‘you do know this is Yorkshire and you are about to be given a right weather spanking. You don’t have months of sunny growing weather left, you have no more than 3 days. So get a move on….’
Why is it so simple to grow weeds yet those so called easy grow carrots prove so pesky. It’s as if the carrots pop out of the seeds, feel the Yorkshire soil and go ‘YOU HAVE GOT TO BE JOKING’.
So if the carrots play ball then we are moving into a spell of living off stews, soups and apple crumble. I can happily live with that. I’m always thankful for whatever the garden yields. It does have to contend with the muppet gardener and Captain Chaos.
So yes it’s that time of year. The weather starts to break OR in our case, break even more. It starts to get colder and darker. For many it can be a tough change. Heralding a long period of what feels like ever increasing claustrophobic imprisonment. Me included. That’s where friendships, happy things and dreams are so important. They can help soften the sadness, even lift us into a better place. So for me it’s time to increasingly focus on those things. I can’t do anything about the weather but I can do influence the truly important stuff. Soon the autumn colours will become spectacular. The important stuff can lift the soul. Yes the following months can be bleak BUT they can also yield so much beauty and wonderful moments as well
Now it’s time to give those carrots a good talking to.
Iβm not sure you can even call those carrots.
Iβm going to focus on important things too. It will help get through the tricky months. In particular I will be having lovely coffee phone call dates with a lovely person and beating someone at on line scrabble! π

The carrots are cute. Although, I am not sure any carrot aspired for “cuteness” π We didn’t get any snow last year, which is odd. Makes me think this year will be a doozy. And now there are no such thing as “snow days.” Just more zoom days!

Zoom days are not cool. Snow days are. You have some good places close by to sledge.

You made a mistake and planted gourmet carrots. In a fancy restaurant, they would prepare them whole and hang them on your table from a tiny rack.

They’re itty bitty baby carrots, and often taste better than their larger counterparts. We’ve had a dismal summer here. My daughter had bought me a tomato plant – it yielded all of six small tomatoes. We just had too much rain and few sunny days. It doesn’t help that we only get at most 5 -6 hours of sun in the early morning hours on our balcony. I also remember trying to grow tomatoes back in Newfoundland. I planted beefsteak and got cherry tomatoes. LOL
Trees have already changed color here – many are already in full fall foliage. I hate to think about winter coming. Those very short days and gray chilly weather. But the years seem to slip by faster and faster. We have to make the most of them and cherish the moments. That can be challenging, locked in as we are in this small apartment. I am grateful for you and for my blogging community. You all bring cheer to my days and for that I am grateful, so very grateful.
And, btw, the way, carrots are definitely NOT an easy vegetable to grow. I never had much luck with them, even in sunny southern Ontario.

No, and it saddens me to see masks in parking lots and an increase in garbage going to landfill since the pandemic struck. Oh my. I have to find silver linings, but sadly I am not finding much right now. This is taking such a toll on people’s spirits and on the planet overall. It will get better though. It has to. It simply has to!

You have such dainty, delicate little veggies! I am a useless gardener. We have had our first frost and remaining flowers curled up their toes. Fortunately I like Winter, love the bleakness of snow fields and naked trees, but I shall miss all our Summer visitors…the wild ones, I mean.

My son planted carrot seeds many years ago. The ones who worked out looked similar… so what? It’s still carrots!
I am always struggling a bit with accepting that summer ends and the darker season is about to come. But once I did accept, I really enjoy it and see the special things in fall and even winter. There is a magic about those seasons which can only be seen if you adjust your heart! I love your view on it, Gary!

People pay a small fortune for tiny cute carrots like yours. We gave our veg a stern talking to and it produced………………… not very much. Saying that though, the tomatoes continue to go nuts, and our parsnip harvest was pretty good. Hubby had peeled and sliced before I got a chance to take a photo and they are now in the freezer with our carrots (not bad), swede (OK) and turnips (small, but beautifully formed). Our green beans are confused. With plants no more than 2 feet high, they are finally producing beans, but there is a helluva lot more cane than plant!!

I hope you guys get lots of snow!! Lots of sledding down the hill… no high-speed tree hugging thoughππ

There are onions in that pic?
My “spring onions” have suddenly gone crazy with growth. I think I’m going to have to pull the bulbs instead of just the stems, which are now all more than 2′ long. My tomatoes, which self propagated from last year, are coming in very very late. We don’t have harsh autumns but I’m not sure there will be sufficient sun. Maybe I’ll move the pots.
I spent a great deal of last night wondering if I could move somewhere that has cold weather, in case the cheeto gets re-elected. The Supreme Court issue is also a major concern. If the get another conservative on there, there will be no point in it even existing as all decisions will be foregone conclusions against human (esp female), social, and eco rights.

So, here is my unsolicited opinion. Nice carrots! They are biennial so you can leav them in the ground over winter.
Also, try Danver half longs. They do pretty good in my hard clay backyard.

It’s all about sunny weather, a little rain, and a lot of manure!
Mind you, here in Australia the sun shines (sometimes too much), it rains ‘enough’ (when it doesn’t the rain tank does the trick), and the compost, manure and organic fertilisers make the garden grow!
However, all that aside, I do love the look of your carrots. I’m sure they’d be tasty, if only a small tasty bite! π
