For a relatively small land, Switzerland often feels like it has so much space.

Sometimes we can have too much space….
When Hawklad was at Nursery and First School he had plenty of friends but things change.
Aspergers, going from a Tiny School to a huge Main School, Covid Insolation, Home Schooling, Rural Life, LIFE.
Currently Hawklad now finds himself self with only one Friend he has contact with, and that is only sporadically. Been like that for over 4 years now. No sign that position will change imminently.
Too much space.

It’s such a different world. I could be happy in isolation such as that, but I hate cold xx

I’m the same, I like my own company. It’s probably more important than relying on others to be fair.

p.s. I have a robin in the garden. It sings and chirps beautifully. It’s a little friend who shares my space around the garden. Wants for nothing, as it loves me for just turning things over and I love that it enjoys my garden. What a wonderful little friend. 🦜

I think there’s a book somewhere called:
How to be your own best friend.
Yeah, I really think I must have read it at one point, because I am my own best friend and at least I am going to be with me for the rest of my life. 😊

Sorry to read this. My niece who is 16 only has one or two friends, too! Maybe things will change in time!

Do I have many friends? Nope. Does it bother me? Nope. I’m friendly to people in my neighbourhood, I am a good work colleague (I hope), but do I have “Friends”, nope, I don’t think so, even though I think some think of me as one of their closest friends. I’m so lucky to have my family and sort of feel the friendshiphood of a few here on the blogs. Does it bother me? Not in the slightest, I am who I am and I like me, like my life in all the ups and downs, it’s fine and dandy.

let’s hope so for both of them x

That’s a tough one. Sorry to know that’s the current situation for Hawklad. Hoping it will improve for your boy and you. ♡

he has to find the way that best suits him, but I do hope he can find those friends ❤️

I had a pen pal/email friend in Toronto. He had Aspergers. He viewed the world much differently than we do. He was brilliant, tho. He developed ALS and went for Canada’s MAID program. I miss talking to him. He lived on a dairy farm, left to him by his parents. All that space…and cows…kept him sane.

there is a really popular presenter here who lives alone in a forest with his dogs. His partner lives miles away. He campaigns about Asperger’s and that isolation is what he needs.

I hope Hawklad finds his tribe sooner than later!
Have you looked into Switzerland’s support for kids on the spectrum?

it was a bit patchy.

That’s disappointing (to me). Are you still having trouble getting proper support from Hawklad’s school?

I think it’s also a part of his personality. Some kids are comfortable with their own company

I’m comfortable with my own company and I can cope with the outside world, but do I seriously want to be a part of it all? Nope, you can keep the pubs, the restaurants, the cinema, the supermarkets, the tourist spots, the many people places. Some love it and they can keep it.

Space. It’s a blessing or a curse.

Space is a blessing and’or a curse, but so is rice, hoovers, shampoo and pets (to name a microscopic amount of things). 😂
Too weird a reply? Let’s go with how rice can be a blessing or a curse: Rice is nice, but only rice sounds wretched. Let’s try hoovers, clean the rug or so bloody noisy the house sounds like a jet is landing on the roof! Let’s try shampoo if you have itchy scalp or you’re bald. Where do we start and end about pets? Let’s not mention 🐶 Captain Chaos!!!

Hugs Gary. Social connection is so important and I know you and especially Hawklad have had it so hard for many reasons, including the pandemic.
You are doing more than enough to care for him and to try to change this. I hope you know that.

the other danger is that I end up trying stuff which might have suited me but just doesn’t suit Hawklad.

Things change. People change. Life has a tendency to change and it isn’t on stop, even if at times it goes slow. These slow times feel so permanent, then suddenly “BOOM!”, but I know, I’m preaching to the choir. I know, you know all this first hand. Thing is, there’s no reason to expect all negative things are permanent and yes sometimes there’s negative things that go on and on and on and oh my word when will it end?! So, who knows when the “Woohoo!” of positive change will land? Change (be it slow or BOOM) is the only thing I can hand on heart know happens. My hope is always to be able to ride the negatives and enjoy the the positive changes as and when.
