Eleven years ago I remember reading a newspaper headline about Autism. I can picture the scene clearly, sat on a platform at a London train station, waiting for my connection back North. A once smart black suit now a bit creased and unfortunately showing clear signs of an egg sandwich accident. Under the headline a politician was claiming that finally autism was now mainstream, embraced and on the political agenda. Individuals on the spectrum were finally going to start to get the help and support they needed. I remember the article so clearly because the newspaper had managed to spell Aspergers wrong….
2025 and I’m sat in a traffic jam, listening to the news. A politician is talking about Autism. Apparently far too many children are being diagnosed as autistic and it’s costing way too much money. The reason behind the rising cost couldn’t be real and was clearly due to pushy parents playing the system. It was unfair on taxpayers, businesses and other parents. That’s why it was right that the Government was going to crack down on the issue. Crack down on the rising tide of Autism….
Is it really 2025.
Oh my God, Gary, this is brutal. The world is going mad. Lack of compassion and downright cruelty seem to be taking over. It’s kind of like nobody in charge knows how to cope anymore. Not as bad as the U.S. at the moment, but still.

sadly it’s going mad and few in charge seem to care.

Jeebus… more of the “hurt anyone who isn’t me” crowd.
Sane people know numbers increased as knowledge and assessment increased.
So sorry.

listening to a senior politician talk about child autism today, he clearly had no idea and was just assuming the hurtful and harmful stereotypes are based on science. Clueless.

That’s horrible!! I don’t understand how did so many awful, clueless, uncaring creatures get so much global power… esp in places where they were voted into that power!!

This is unreal. It’s sad when it’s about the bottom line or political favours and not about the societal good and impacts of not supporting those in the greatest need.
If only those politicians spend a day in the shoes of caregivers of individuals with autism and then they’ll realize how absurd they truly are being.

some of the politicians are actually saying that kids with autism just need some stronger parenting to get them going…..

I always say spend a day in someone else’s shoes and they’ll learn. So infuriating.

Reminds me of the old, “if we stop testing for it, the numbers will stop increasing.”
It’s like to be a politician you have to have your empathy… and a few brain cells, removed. And some aren’t starting out with many to begin with.

that’s the argument now, stop testing and it goes away…

How about research to find out why it is on the increase? Typical government response to inconvenient problems.
LikeLike
problem with research is it might not give the politicians the answers they want to hear

How about addressing the cause of it and not penalize those who suffer. radical idea maybe

it’s how it should be, it’s what a caring society should be doing.

That person (and all who are in agreement with him) must have never encountered autism in anyone they love or care about. Governments any more seem only interested in what power they can push and what will be put into their pockets by it.

watching most of the politicians, they are way more focused on their political careers rather than on what is right

I just popped into check on dear blogging friends and see that you ask
“Is this really 2025?” and so I will just add, that in the words of Byron Katie:
“When I argue with reality I lose, but only 100% of the time. How do I know that the wind should blow? It’s blowing!”
