‘We need a bigger bin’ doesn’t seem to have quite the same dramatic ring as ‘we need a bigger boat’ from Jaws….

Houston We have Problem….

In the great scheme of things, it’s not an Apollo Spacecraft is running out of fuel level crisis. It’s not even anywhere near the patio weedkiller isn’t really working with the Red Weed from War of the Worlds emergency.

Ok it’s just a wheelie bin issue…

But a common one round here.

As a cost cutting idea the local Council changed our recycling collections from every 2 to 4 weeks. To be fair they did give us a slightly bigger bin but in the good old days, every two weeks you would just pile up all the cardboard next to the inevitable full recycling bin and it would be collected. Now if it’s not in the bin, it ain’t being collected….

So these days, after about 2 weeks you see local residents employ various strategies to fit more and more into the already packed bin. Some carefully cut up the cardboard into smaller pieces (takes them hours), some madly folding and refolding as if in a crazy origami tournament, others have bonfires, others just start cramming cardboard into the normal refuge bin. I’ve elected for the get the ladders out, step into the full bin and start jumping up and down to compress. I dread to think of the internal pressures being applied to that poor wheelie bin. You never see good old Dr Who having to do that with his Tardis.

Anyways enough of Yorkshire Troubles.

We clearly haven’t had enough Castle trips this summer. Let’s have a look at Warwick Castle, one of Britain’s finest historic sites. Brings back a ton of memories, I went to university many many moons ago at Warwick.

  1. Hmm, those council rubbish collections.
Once a week we have some very fussy council contractors turn up to inspect our rubbish, and if it passes, they take it away.
Rubbish that fails is left behind with a naughty sticker on it.
As it happens we have a freestanding concrete fireplace that is the only reminder of an old house that got demolished on our property. It’s easier just to cram any flammable rubbish into that, and set a match to it..

  2. Lovely photos again Gary.
We have four bins here: green for garden waste collected fortnightly with the main refuse (black bin), paper and cardboard recycling one week (Purple bin), then the week after the next black bin collection, plastics (grey bin). So we go black and green, purple, black and green, grey.
However, we do not pay £50 a year for garden waste (20 weeks only), so just use three bins. There are now plans to introduce weekly food waste collections. Ain’t gonna happen as we don’t have any and I don’t fancy rats.

  3. I just love the photos of those castles… so atmospheric! Re. bins, we’ve been making our own compost for years now. I remember some years back trying to make more space in the green bin by jumping inside it. Nearly got mixed up with the contents. 🤦‍♀️

  4. Fabulous images, Gary. What a treat to see!
We have a green waste bin, including household organic waste – weekly. A yellow bin for recyclable paper, cardboard, bottles, etc – fortnightly. And a red bin for all other household waste – weekly. Apart from the green waste bin occasionally, we hardly ever come near filling them. I do feel for you. Nothing worse than overflowing waste of any nature. I must say, though; I chuckled more than once at your descriptive words. Can’t afford to lose your sense of humour. And, hopefully, you won’t lose your balance as you stomp on your waste. 🙂

  6. We have weekly pickup. Grey bin for paper, blue bin for recycle, green bin for compostables and black bags for garbage ($3.50) per bag (3 bag limit). No charge for the bin collection.
I live rural so I compost my own garden waste.

  7. A group of us once protested against the unsightly new wheelie bins issued by the council, by wheeling them up to the local councillor’s house and chanting, “No wheelie bins! No wheelie bins!” Then we dumped them in the local park … forgetting that they all had our house numbers on them. 🤣🤣🤣

  8. We have just gone over to a similar system. We had weekly collections of both ordinary rubbish and recycling in different bags. Now we have wheelie bins – one for each on alternate weeks. We are clearly still better off than you. In the forest donkeys have started knocking them over and scattering their forage.

  9. Here most places send recycling straight to the dump and the fees goes who knows where. But it’s a lot of funny business. I’ve known people that work at the recycling places and say it just goes to the dump so don’t even bother…🤬🤬🤬

Please keep the castle tour photos coming. I love them!

  11. I was coming back from a thing at Manchester and instead of sticking to the A483 that had become a car park, I pulled of. The voice of direction from my phone kept saying things like “At the next junction turn right” or “Do a U turn” and to be honest I actually kept answering it “NO!” and “SHANT!”. I found myself next to a building called Pubby McPubFace. The easy alternative route was ROAD CLOSED and for some reason I ended up going home via Bala and Llangollen and through mountains, past so many signs to castles I have never heard of. Maybe there’s a touring holiday to be had on that route sometime soon?

      1. Attending the “Thing” in Manchester, I realised I knew more than a lot of those presenting it. So, maybe that was the reason to attend. As for the place I stayed that had nothing to do with the “Thing” called Luther King House, that was so peaceful, compared to the city centre, full of noise and confusion.
