A trip out to the beautiful Lake District, a three hour drive from us. Carefully chosen to be a safe, uneventful, Hawklad adventure.

Originally we had planned to park up by Lake Ullswater, well that was the plan. We made it to within a couple of miles of our parking spot and we hit road works. The road was closed and we were sent on a signed magical mystery diversion tour. This part of the world there aren’t ever too many alternative road options. We later found out that this diversion was over 50 miles long and given the windy, narrow roads, would have taken absolutely ages to drive. Thankfully the diversion went past another stunning lake, Thirlmere and we parked up.

You can see why Wordsworth was inspired to write here.

The trip back was an adventure…

A motorway tyre blow out driving at 70mph, two hours stood on a roadside bank waiting for a recovery truck. That wasn’t the place to try and change a tyre. Thankfully a very nice Highway Patrol parked behind our car to ward off any collisions.

Here’s the thing, Hawklad was perfectly fine with the breakdown but really struggled when first the Highway Patrol Officer turned up and then the Recovery Mechanic. It’s the fear that he could be seen, will stand out, will get noticed. Thankfully the tyre was safely changed and off we set again.

Another reminder that as much as you try to plan or micromanage a day, life still happens….

  1. Yes, you can plan as much as you like but other plans often get in the way. But the photos of the Lake District are inspirationally beautiful. The Lake District always has a special place in my heart. Glad you could get away for the day and appreciate the beauty. Makes so much difference!

  2. Impossible to plan around unforeseeable incidents and road works. I find that being diverted often leads to good discoveries. The Lake District is wonderful. I’m glad you got your tire changed without too much drama.

  3. Went to a coffee morning and coped as a one off with the sounds of others. The chat and some banging spoons on the table to get everyone’s attention. On the way home the road was blocked in the distance with flashing lights and I was NOT going to keep going to find out for why. Longer return journey. This then got me to call in at a garden centre for some metres of insect cloth. I’m going with the method of Charles Dowding to keep everything off of my growing things.

  4. Yes, that is so true. Life happens!
Interesting that Hawklad rolled with the tyre mishap but not the people involved. Sounds like he is very capable of remaining ‘calm and unaffected’ in certain conditions. Being able to do this; perhaps finding a means to transfer this skill to those arenas where he does have difficulties may prove worthwhile. Life is a learning skill for us all…
I’ve been curious, Gary. Do you have a hobby or interest that is for you alone? All carers need a little respite.

  5. First of all, I am glad everything worked out well in the end. And I agree, “life happens while we are making other plans”. There seems to be more in for us than what we think. However, it was a great option to find such a beautiful scenic spot. Not to forget how you both managed that tyre issue. Looking back, maybe Hawklad is a bit proud of himself that he made it through such an unexpected situation. You are a great dad, Gary!
