A trip to the really really really big city…..Clearly it’s still not big enough as they are doing even more building work. Can’t believe no one asked for our Yorkshire Passports to come this far South.

While we were in the SOUTH we passed a local radio station doing an outdoor broadcast. The queue to get on LIVE seemed longer than the queue to get into this place…

I have never seen the attraction of being heard over the airwaves, just for a few short moments. The super wide berth Hawklad took around this Radio Unit clearly demonstrated his thoughts on that subject as well.

Back a few decades and at Warwick University I shared a student house with someone who was desperate to get their voice broadcast. This student spent so much time phoning in radio shows. Music Requests, Quizzes, Call-in Discussions, Traffic Updates, any method to get on air. Proudly telling anyone who would listen of the successful LIVE appearances. Hardly a week went by without another LIVE tale to tell. I’m amazed the Coventry Radio Stations never clubbed together to get a restraining order on him.

One time I did ask why he did this. His response sticks with me

“I hate the thought of being Mr Nobody…”

Rather ironic as I can remember the names of the other 5 housemates but can’t remember his name… It might have started with a P or S. AND actually Mr Nobody is kinda famous. Hawklad loved his Mr Men books and one of his favourite characters was this good looking chap.

  1. How was Hawklad after the trip? Someday he might have to leave your ssfe home, anf try to make it on his own. Will a big city call, or will it be a small town?

  2. Well,…you’re not a Mr. Nobody and I will always remember your name. No passport to go South! HA! Different view for sure. Just a bit of my history—it was ‘89 and I was in college and called in to the local radio station. I can’t remember what I said when I called in; but won an all-expense paid trip to Dallas, Texas and watched my ONLY National Basketball Association game and had a fun time. I was interviewed again some years later about something we were doing at school. I think an interview with you two would be absolutely encouraging to the Big City folks! Many hugs my friend!! 💛

    1. That must have been an experience and you must have been so excited to win that. I once was interviewed by the local radio station about a mess up work had made and I got the short straw on trying to explain it.. Funnily enough the piece was not used as the local football manager got sacked and the news was filled with that. ❤️❤️

  3. Rather sad. thinking that a brief appearance on TV will make you “somebody”. As a child I thought it would be good to be famous but I went off that idea as I grew up. Seeing the big city must be a shock to your system, coming from where you live!

  4. I last travelled to London when Julia was pregnant with our firstborn. He was 30 a couple of months ago. I haven’t missed it and I have no plans to go again. If I want to go sightseeing I can go on Google.

I blame much of the decline in . . . well, everything, to be honest . . . on reality TV stars.

How can anybody become “somebody” just by being on radio or TV. However, in the 2020s it is actually a career.

Anyway, Hawklad will never be a nobody because he is already as a star in WP and to his dad.

      1. I’d agree with that. The constant presence of reality TV on air is enough to distort reality. How can kids ever grow up with a balanced view of the world if they are shown that garbage portrayed as being acceptble?

  5. Earlier when I listened to radio programmeswered, I heard people sending in their requests and their questions being answered and so on. But now it has been a long time since I have listened to programmes on radio or on TV. It is sad when people are scared of being nobody.
