It’s still WINTER, no sign of SPRING…. YET.

Thanks to Bill Murray, we know it’s Groundhog Day today. Various Groundhogs seeing or not seeing SHADOWS, Six or NOT Six more weeks of winter. Looking at the various Groundhog Facebook videos emanating from across the States, there isn’t just one Master Hog these days. It’s like Boxing with its multiple champions across multiple sanctioning bodies. So might as well add another weather predicting body.

Unfortunately groundhogs are a bit scarce on the ground in Yorkshire.

So it’s HoundDog Day in Yorkshire.

Ok he isn’t a pure Hound Dog, more an accident between a randy Cocker Spaniel and an unsuspecting fluffy German Spitz. But needs most. Another problem, unlike Batman, this hero hasn’t sussed out the concept of shadows yet. Actually he hasn’t sussed out many concepts. Thankfully he has found the delights of SOCKS. So the 2024 winter forecast is based on will the nutter grab the long or shorter sock. Long winter or shorter winter.

And the results….

It’s a LONGER WINTER forecast.

Actually he then picked up the short sock. So what does a Long and Short sock mean. Where is Bill Murray when you need him.

  1. Good concept. For myself, I just look at the sky. If it’s sunny or cloudy?
But up where I live, on the 59.5 parallel, it really doexn’t matter. There’s 3 more months of winter no matter what!

    1. And where I live, summer simply means there’s more summery days than wintery days, and winter simply means there’s more wintery days than summery days. And it’s not too unusual to experience winter and summer on the same day 😂😢

      1. Typhoons? Nope. The occasional cyclone although they are beginning to occur more frequently.

As for earthquakes, our buildings are designed to withstand quakes up to magnitude 8. The loss of life in the Christchurch earthquake was due almost exclusively to the collapse of the CTV building that had been damaged in a stronger earthquake a few months earlier and had been preoccupied without adequate inspection.

In my lifetime (I’m 74) there has been around 200 deaths caused by earthquakes. Compare that to the 1005 murders and more than 15,000 deaths from road crashes over the same period and you’ll realise that, while frightening for most people (I enjoy the thrill) they are mostly harmless.

And when you consider that cold weather has been the direct cause of more than 10,000 deaths in Canada over my lifetime, I will definitely choose our earthquakes over your winters 😁

      2. I’vs lived through 2 minor quakes, no thanks. Death from cold is like going to sleep. You pass out before you die. If I had the chouce, I’ll take freezi g to death. My preference, of course, is dying in my own bed. 🙂

  2. Some tv channel used to repeat the movie all day, but I can’t find it this year.

Puxatawnie Phil is the ‘offical’ forecaster and he didn’t seen his shadow = early sping. But he only has a 40% success rate.

  3. Your Hound is very beautiful. Also very smart because picking up long and then short leaves his options open. That way no one can sue him. It’s what everyone over here does, suing, I mean. Poor groundhogs should be left alone!

  4. LOL! Your pup looks like a lot of fun. We recently hit a patch of warmer weather and some of my plants think it’s time to sprout up. Our daffodils will be blooming by the middle of next month! (Unless Mother Nature decides to plunge us into another deep freeze).

  5. Happy Groundhog Day AND Happy Hounddog Day!!! Both are just adorable, and probably neither one of them are any good at projecting when spring will arrive. All in good time, I suppose! Hugs!

  6. This is too cute, Gary! 💕 I want a hound dog now too. Enjoy your longer winter! 🤣 Thankfully, ours is predicted to be short. Gotta love climate change and global warming.

  7. I love it. That is the cutest predictor of longer or shorter winter I’ve ever seen. I for one never got the whole groundhog thing since it’s automatically 6 weeks from February 2nd. to the first day of spring. I guess it boils down to the cold of winter and warmth of spring.

  8. Gary, I just slipped into a cute coma! Seriously, I can’t take the cuteness! Happy late Groundhog Day and it’s HOUND DOG day every day! Finley had to go to the vet this morning—with her sweater on, she declared that we’ll have 6 more weeks of winter here in our TINY slice of the world. Oh, and on any GIVEN day, we will take the sweater off because the temp might go up 40 degrees. AND THEN THE NEXT DAY, we will put it back on because it will drop 60 degrees. Climate change anyone? Best have both pairs of socks handy on any given day! Hugs to you and Hawklad and Belly Rubs for the cute sock boy! ❤️🐾

      1. This made me giggle so loud my pup, Finley, is staring at me! She probably HATES that I put her in her “tiny” red coat and cute sweater (the gal who said, “I’ll never put clothes on my animals!” 🫣🤫🙄🤓😜😂). I really need to take cues from her little eye rolls and side looks! 😂🐾🐾❤️❤️❤️
