Nearly the longest day and it still doesn’t feel like it’s nearly summer. A walk along the bitingly cold Yorkshire Coast.

These are really unstable cliffs. After high tides and especially after storms, you will see intrepid fossil hunters scouring the base of the rocks for fragments of a past world. Locally it’s known as the Jurassic Coast.

No T-Rex hunting for us this day, way too cold. Hands much better employed stuck in the pockets avoiding frost bite. Is it really the longest day in a few hours…. As we eventually headed back to the warmth of the car we passed a bare chested Surfer marching briskly towards his inevitable frozen doom in the North Sea.

“You might need a few more layers on….”

“Probably. The secret is to not scream too loudly and look like you enjoying it.”

“I thought the secret was to surf somewhere way warmer”

It is but then you don’t get to surf round Icebergs. Plus if it was warmer my wife would have me cutting the grass….”

  1. Looks so beautiful, Gary. Warmer days are ahead. Happy first day of summer soon to you both! 7 more days of school over here. 🙏

  2. We’re coming out of a heatwave. Grades K-8 had half days all week because afternoons were hitting high 80’s and even 90 with a 100 degree index. Between there and here, give me someplace in the middle with the beauty of your photos.

  3. I would take cold hands and other cold body parts right now, in exchange for the upper 80’s & 90’s, with over 100° forecasted for our weekend. I always say that I prefer winter over summer, and it’s true. You can always stay inside, and bundle up in the winter, but in the summer you could run around naked and still be hot and sticky. It’s very humid where we live. I’m mostly staying in the house, with the AC on, and fans blowing on me, too! (Because running around naked outside doesn’t sound like a good idea…😜)

      1. Ha, ha! Yeah, I’m a weirdo who loves wind and rain and snow (luckily, our neighborhood has never been hit with anything really severe) Tornadoes have come our way a few times, but storms always seem to fall apart before they get to us. Derecho winds are the worst. We’ve dealt with those just once, but remained unscathed.

  4. Yes, there’s always something good in almost any situation. What a beautiful coastline. I wish you could send us a breath of that cool air. Would gladly work an exchange!

  5. Those photographs are amazing! Yikes on the cold. I would definitely not be in the water, but his comment about mowing cracks me up!
We are in a heatwave of temps in the 90’s! 🥵
