If results go his way and he feels ready, then September might see Hawklad start University. Hopefully in person rather than online. I so hope he can, hopefully the start of building friendships and a life outside of the home.

But here’s a scary fact.

Currently the average student leaves an English University with a debt of £53000. England has some of the highest student loan debts in the world.

This is at the same time that prices are spiralling upwards, property costs are eye wateringly high and the jobs market is starting to collapse. More older people are staying in work way longer to pay rising living costs and to help out their younger family members. AI is starting to destroy the jobs market, remove the jobs that were once open to the younger generation. All this means that the younger jobs market is rapidly contracting.

£53000 student debt for limited job prospects and an uncertain future.

As a handful of global billionaires become trillionaires, just how many of the ridiculously rich and national governments are actively thinking about the future for this and future younger generations.

Maybe they are waiting to ask the next version of the AI models for an answer.

  2. Yes, that’s a horrendous debt! I know, as I’ve a nephew who paid that when he went to university in England. And then he dropped out 🤦‍♀️… However, they’re only a few thousand (very little compared to UK) in the Republic of Ireland, but rent is high here and he would be much further away from home. Whatever happens, I hope he gets to go where his talents lie and that he enjoys a fulfilling time ahead. However, it’s not an easy time for parents… that’s for sure.

  4. The real Truth is, Gary, the only people they want to be university educated are their own children. They want everyone else to be wage-slaves, with everyone so far in debt they will be unable to even take a weekend or a vacation because they need every shilling just to pay off the interest on their debt.
    There are two things they are not considering. One, uneducated people will not have the knowledge to plant a seerd to feed themselves or their families.
    Two is that their children will be so inbred in a couple generations that they will all be imbeciles. The world will return to the Dark Ages, but with noone in charge.
    For better or worse, the opportunity will be there to start all over again. There will be a 50/50 chance we can do it better next time.
    But 50/50 I think is being a dreamer.

  9. I thought I read somewhere of changes to the system? I sincerely hope so. It must cost a fortune to administer and then much of the debt is written off or unpaid because earning levels aren’t high enough. And meanwhile it’s a weight around your neck. There must be a better way! Irrespective of that, I truly hope that your youngster can find a place that works for him and his future xx

  15. Is he capable of working on the land? or some sort of practical hands on job?, An apprenticeship might be out of the question if the UK has decided to make them into an academic exercise.
    AI cant replace skilled labour.

  18. the amount of school debt out there is astonish, and beyond the reach of average people. It’s been this way in the U.S. for ages. A few years ago, they passed legislation to relieve students of the predatory loans that can never be paid off ( I’ve seen this myself with my son and others who start out with 20 grand loans, pay for 3 years and now have 40 grand left to pay) and then our latest admin reversed the legislation and are making the students who got releife pay them back now. It’s sad sad state of affairs.My one boyfriend was in his 60’s still paying off debt from his 30’s..that’s just crazy. I hope things go better for you guys!

  19. And yet, regardless of the consequences, what would be a fabulous outcome for him (uni) can’t be denied, or discarded because of cost. It’s definitely ‘between a rock and a hard place’ situation, as the saying goes!!!

  20. I told one of my sons that as he wasn’t academic he should select a University by the coast and enjoy himself for three years in a relaxed atmosphere. Then they changed the payment system. Our education system is a mess, whichever way you look at it.

  22. First of all, CONGRATULATIONS to Hawklad! University already??? It doesn’t seem possible! Where have the years gone??? As re the college debt and AI … sigh. I HATE AI … yes, I understand there are some very good uses for it, but as I predicted years ago, it is being used for all the wrong purposes. I still think an education is valuable, if for no other reason than we learn to think for ourselves. Someday, the lights will go out and AI will be completely useless. When that happens, I like to think there will be intelligent, well-educated people to help the world survive. Best of luck to Hawklad!!!

  25. Praying Hawklad gets to enjoy all the adventures of college! The US student debt is just as bad. Students using AI to cheat isn’t helping either. Why bother going to college if you’re just going to use AI for all your homework?!?!?!

  26. Oh my. That’s a hard debt to make sense of. I hope that Hawklad feels ready to explore a new world in whatever way fits his needs.

    We have terrible levels of university debt in the U.S. It can be a roadblock to many who would like to get a degree. The federal government also just passed guidance that limits student loan amounts for areas that aren’t an approved “professional” degree — things that didn’t show up on the list? Nursing, dentistry, teaching, social work…so many important fields that just got cut out of funding opportunities.
