Our little bungalow needed a small water feature.

Please someone tell my I’m wrong…..
In the UK, in the STATE schooling system, far too often the focus is on the wellbeing of THE SYSTEM rather than on the interests of the individual pupil.
The key is that the system runs efficiently, can cope with limited funding and ultimately produces the UNITS the ECONOMY is expected to need. Not much mention of the needs of the individual child. Not much mention of the system going the extra mile for every child.
Am I being ……
Pupils pushed through one educational route regardless of whether it suits the individual. For many it’s never about how high they can fly, never about big or beautiful dreams, not about asking what the child what they want. Far too often it’s about what the SYSTEM decides the child IS.
Pink Floyd got it so right in The Wall.
Tell me I’m wrong……
It is very unfair that they aren’t concerned with the individual child.

Indeed it does. Especially nowadays when most authorities are concentrating on individual needs

Indeed, “Hey! Teacher! Leave those kids alone!”

There are similar scholastic red tap situations here in the States as well. It’s disappointing.

At least teachers, good teachers were allowed to teach. More chance of finding what works for the individual that way.

I don’t think I do agree on this occasion. Aside from the most affluent, I do think that the country is broken at its core and needs a fundamental rethink of values … but also systems? I do however, without question, hope all is going OK for you both xx

Absolutely, the system is broken, it reflects on the country as a whole. The dominant values are so wrong.

It won’t surprise you to hear that I don’t believe that a public Education system and Health Care system can flourish in the hands of people who don’t use their services. You have to live and understand the issues to care enough to solve them x

It is a very backwards system and thinking for sure!

I am not familiar with the school system in the UK. The only background information actually comes from you. But I believe you since you have experienced the whole system to its core!!

Maybe other schools are better but I’m still waiting to hear that from anyone I know.

Well, for one, there isn’t a UK education system.

Sadly, I figured that meanwhile. It is hard to imagine.

Well yes, we have to make it all look good. In the end it’s all about money and the greed of those who’ve got it. One might become cynical. But I love your water feature. Very modest.

I don’t think you’re wrong. In fact I think you are damn close to right on. Don’t produce employees, produce workers who will be stuck in the same thankless job for the rest of their lives. And if they die young, no problen, there is someone else waiting to fill their shoes, without missing a beat.

I heard a government minister describe children as resources…. That says it all.

You are absolutely right. The system exists to defend the system. Damn the child. Just…”get in line and behave.” I see that the UK system is no different than the US system.

It feels like those who don’t fit the mould are seen as a problem to be discarded or are seen as not worth the investment.

Agreed. The “system” does not want free thinking individuals. It only wants blind obedience. Your son is the quintessential square peg. He is better off learning about life from you…not robotic “teachers” that are products of the same institution. Bless your boy for navigating that maze as best as he can.

Nah. I can only speak for Scotland (different syste to England – there is no “UK education system”) but whilst the mainstream offers choice, there’s then room for individualisation through alternative courses, college link, vocational links, YDOs, alternative provisions, outside partners, etc.
